National
Organization
for Women

Akron Area NOW was founded in 1971 by founding mothers Virginia Busson, Helen Moss and Evelyn Sager as well as many NOW activists who led the fight locally for Women's Rights.

"This is not a pleasure group, this is not solely a social group, but it is a vital group of women and men working together to achieve equal rights under the law, tax deductions for child care expenses, parent controlled day care centers, equal education and job opportunities, the right for women to control their own reproductive lives, and last, but not least, the passage of the equal rights amendment without crippling riders."
Helen Moss 1991.

This organization started with three members who met one evening in May. Since then we have grown by leaps and bounds.

We have marched together, sung together, picketed together, silently stood holding candles together, laughed together and cried together. We've shared victories and defeats, and we've learned the real meaning of sisterhood.

Though some of our victories are being eroded away, and some - like the ERA - were not ratified, we've learned too much to ever go back, and we will never give up the fight.

Akron Area NOW is currently covering six counties: Summit, Stark, Medina, Portage, Wayne and Holmes. We are a politically active organization with representation on the state and national level.
